Using 3D printer support material to complete a design

Limiting human involvement to leave room for the process.

Dr. Thomas Modeen from Qatar made this series of objects, Buildware Morandi, to explore the use of support material from the 3D printing process as part of the final design.

The white plastic forms were modeled and positioned in Rhino. Modeen then allowed the 3D printer program to fill in the shapes of the darker support material. In this way the support material algorithms completed the designs left intentionally unfinished by Modeen.
