Named one of the top 10 business ideas for 2010 by Springwise, 100kGarages is an experimental project in digital fabrication and the creative maker community. Over 150 fabrication facilities are registered on the Fab Map and the job board continues to grow. A recent update at the 100k Garages blog shared some exciting news on what the ShopBot and Ponoko crew have been up to.
• Easy Cut: “…simplifying CNC routing the way that Ponoko has done with laser cutting.”
• Project Testing: “…something that will give Makers that want to be more involved in the fabrication process the ability to test a design’s “cutability” before sending it to a Fabber”
• More Digital Tools: more tools will be added once the processes can be streamlined and there are enough educational materials available on the site
• Connecting Makers with Designers: A project section for the site will serve as a showcase for designers, promoting their digital fabrication skills to makers looking for help on their projects.
Keep up with all the progress at the 100kGarages blog. They’ve also got a call for ideas for a museum installation going on right now.

Because we’ve offered a great deal to make stuff at the NZ hub, we thought it was only fair to offer something from the US hub too.
So here you go …
Everything made using P3 sized 3mm black acrylic sheets at the US hub between now and 11:59pm Sunday 23 January 2010 (US Pacific time), will get it at cost.
To grab your cost-price acrylic just make things as you normally do – and select P3 sized 3mm black acrylic from the USA materials catalog during the making process before the Sunday PST deadline!
So go add a design now and grab a great deal.

Examines the creative and commercial value of musical sampling, including the related debates over artistic expression, copyright law, and (of course) money.

Copyright Criminals traces the rise of hip-hop from the urban streets of New York to its current status as a multibillion-dollar industry. For more than thirty years, innovative hip-hop performers and producers have been re-using portions of previously recorded music in new, otherwise original compositions. When lawyers and record companies got involved, what was once referred to as a “borrowed melody” became a “copyright infringement.”The film showcases many of hip-hop music’s founding figures like Public Enemy, De La Soul, and Digital Underground—while also featuring emerging hip-hop artists from record labels Definitive Jux, Rhymesayers, Ninja Tune, and more.

just may be my favorite laser-cut lighting design ever

Gold and silver paint turn these cardboard lamps by Hiroshi Tsunoda Design Studio into a glamorous statement of simplicity and sustainability. The Flamp table lamp is made from laser-cut cardboard and polypropylene. A cable and socket comes inside each Flamp box. And best of all, it’s on sale at Design Code for just €30. If you find metallics too outlandish, there are also black and white versions with a variety of polypropylene colors.

Hiroshi Tsunoda Design Studio is an independent collective of young creatives under the direction of thirty-six year old Tsunoda. From their base in Barcelona, HTDS produces a range of furniture, lighting, and design objects for the home. Jump ahead to see a selection of CNC and laser-cut designs.

Kyoko Hashimoto turns acrylic jewelry into an artform. Her work pushes the common aesthetics of plastic accessories by layering shapes and combining materials. Hashimoto’s practice is rooted in conceptual art pieces giving her line of wearable jewelry a distinct cutting-edge appeal. The work is beautiful and strange, refined yet cartoonish, nostalgic while still being undeniably contemporary.

Hashimoto was born in Japan, educated in Australia, and recently relocated her studio from Tokyo to Berlin. An exhibition of her work is running at Switzerlands Galerie Caractère until Valentine’s Day.

until 24 January; Museum of Craft and Folk; Art San Francisco

Open Source Embroidery explores the “use [of] embroidery, thread, and code as a tool for participatory production and distribution.” It introduces visitors to the particular methods behind fiber and textile constructions – inviting participants to design their own weave drafts, do a bit of needle work, try their hand at weaving – and how craft can intersect with technology. I had the chance to attend the first week of the exhibition during my October visit to San Francisco. The docent urged my friend and I to really take our time with each piece as the artwork depended on visitor participation. Being a Fibers major, I was not at all unfamiliar with just how much time a little yarn work can take.

showing off the beauty of clear acrylic

Speaking of origami, I love these laser-etched tangram earrings from Antlitz. The etched lines read like a penciled diagram, looking very mathy and sleek.
But if angles aren’t your thing, Antlitz designers Dörte Bundt and Ke Wu have a range of curves up for offer too, including a intricately cut tree to hang your jewelry. Keep up with the latest designs—including new floral patterned pendants—at the Antlitz blog.
