Isette’s Success with the Ponoko Makers Grant

Follow up on the Renegade Craft Fair

Jennifer Putzier aka Isette recently received a Ponoko Makers Grant to present her Ponoko produced works at the Chicago Renegade Craft Fair. Following is her account of the event and what the grant helped her achieve. SALES….

Hello all! Jennifer at Isette here, bringing you a recap of Renegade Chicago. It was, in a word, busy! The weather was beautiful, and people were everywhere! What I had originally applied to the Maker Grant for was help to defray the costs of custom display pieces for the booth. The chandeliers were designed as eyecatchers – something representative of my work, and big and interesting enough to bring people into the booth

The response to these was fantastic – over the next month I will be working out some of the kinks and hope to have it in the shop. I also custom designed necklace stands / easels for the show. I made the design in both whiteboard and MDF (later painted white) and they were a huge hit amongst other jewelers that stopped by the booth.

I think the best part, though, was getting to talk to the people that stopped by. I was surprised at the number of people that knew about Ponoko! I got to pull out the samples to show people the variety of materials…I could see people thinking about the amazing things they could make with them. So hello to all the lovely people I met, and try Ponoko – it’s fun!

Congrats to Jennifer on her success with sales and making some new Ponoko friends.

Anyone else with the entrepreneurial spirit can apply for a Ponoko Makers Grant to help them along the way.

Laser Cut Book of Space

Johan Hybschmann turns a sketchbook into a 3D scene from Alexander Sokurov’s film ‘Russian Ark
3883859543_111a20ae37_o
The complexity of the project is quite astounding with so many finely cut layers it would be such delicate work but the result is superb. Anyone using Ponoko could conceivably produce something along these lines out of paper or cardboard without to much cost due to the speed which both materials can be cut.

Here is Johan on the inspiration for the project.

The inspiration came directly from the single shot film sequence in Sokurov’s Russian Ark, where the camera is taken through the timeless spaces of the Winter Palace, jumping decades from one room to another. The distortion of time is, of course, interesting in terms of the timelessness of the spaces but I was interested in the way that the camera never looks back. Even though the viewer never sees the full dimensions of these spaces, we are still left with a sense of coherence and wholeness. But what if the back of the room was mindblowingly different? It’s as if we constantly use the previous space to create an understanding of what should be behind us.

The book is an attempt to spatially prolong that perceptual idea. Two different spaces from the film sequence have been cut into each half of the book, as constructed perspectives. When the pages spread, the silhouettes of the elements visually collide, and the space within the book changes in character as the user travels through it by flicking through the pages.

Bike Share Copenhagen is challenging cyclists to create ‘an attractive and modern bike share system’

The competition is a design competition for a new bike share system for the City of Copenhagen. The competition entries should highlight both design and functionality. The competition will run from September 1, 2009 to November 18, 2009. The winner will be announced during the United Nation’s Climate Conference [COP 15], which will be held in Copenhagen in December 2009.

Ponoko Product on Front Page of digg

Kyle A Koch’s iPhone Document Scanner made via Ponoko.
Picture 1
A few weeks back Kyle A Koch’s iPhone Document Scanner made the front page of digg, and thereby increasing his exposure as an emerging industrial designer to be watched. Previously mentioned on the Ponoko Blog Kyle has 4 options for the iPhone document scanner in his Ponoko showroom ranging from downloading the file for free, to an MDF version for $45.

Apart from the great design it also shows the power of using social networking/bookmarking/sharing sites such as digg, facebook, myspace, twitter and especially Ponoko to share your design ideas and even garner a social capital, peer acknowledgement and maybe a few sales..

Congratulations Kyle, thanks digg.

Kyle A Koch is an industrial design student at the University of Cincinnati’s school of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning (DAAP). He is currently working on point of purchase displays as a structural designer.

Two Story Lego House

Fully functional house constructed from Lego Bricks

James May, one of the presenters of the UK series Top Gear has combined his passion for Lego and his leverage of mass media to get over 1,200 people to build the two-story home of his dreams in Dorking, UK, entirely out of Lego. Part of a new BBC series James May’s Toy Stories, the house will be built from more than 3 million Lego pieces with Lego furniture and even a flushing Lego lavatory. Upon completion the UK TV star has vowed to live in when it is finished.

‘I’m planning to stay there for two or three days, or until it falls down – whichever is sooner. I’m pretty relaxed about it, but will just have to be careful moving around.
‘If I wake up buried under a pile of bricks, I’ll know it’s gone wrong.’

I can just imagine programming this into Lego Factory and watching (virtual) smoke billow out of the software as it crashes trying to calculate the bricks to be used.
