As everyone knows by now, we’ve been a little bit busy on a few new things as we work up to a big release – and here’s a sneak peek at one part of this …

Ponoko ID is a new way for consumers to shop for custom designed manufactured goods, which also gives designers a new source of potential customers.

Shoppers use the new service to post requests for custom-made individualized goods. Requests are sent to a selection of Ponoko’s pool of more than 10,000 designers who then have the chance to put forward a bid to make the item.

This means shoppers can have their goods designed and made just for them at the lowest price possible, making Ponoko ID the world’s first shopping request and match making service for manufactured goods.

We have created Ponoko ID for 2 key reasons:

1. We always want to make it as easy as possible for consumers to get what they want, without being limited to what is on the shelf at the local retail store and without being stumped by the major effort it takes to find a designer, manufacturer and materials for their unique product ideas.
2. We also always want to be creating new streams of potential customers for our designers and give them more opportunities to turn their creativity into cash with the least upfront risk.

It’s in public beta now. This means any shopper can use it to send requests for stuff to be made just for them to a select group of designers who are testing this with us now.
